Axis constraint when rotating...
« on: April 17, 2011, 07:23:59 AM »

It is very simple but very useful too... It is necessary ror having an exact control over the object to be sculpted. It makes the whole process be like the workflow of a clay pot sculpter's work on his rotating table.

You check a checkbox named 'constraint through y axis', for example and, there, the object begins to turn around only the 'y' axis when you rotate it by alt+rmb... giving you all the freedom to 'sculpt' through the given rotation axis, in a precise way.

do you mean you want to be able to sculpt and rotate at the same time? IE you would hold down both left and right mouse buttons?

No... I mean that I want to have the option to 'lock' the object so that it may be rotated only through a given axis (x, z or y). This presupposes, of course, having a reference axis' indicator in the viewport (something that now does not exist at all). It is something that all modelling apps have in fact. It is something necessary for having a sense of orientation inside the working space.

In almost all modelling apps the user understands the orientation mainly from the existence of the 'floor' grid (plus a three colored axis indicator, usually). In this case the floor grid may be of optional scale and appearance (the axis indicator optional only as to its appearance or not in the viewport). But its existence is necessary because of the need of having, as forementioned, the sense of orientation.

Oh, OK, that is simpler. I am going to work on the camera controls a bit, so I should be able to easily get this in...

It would be good, indeed, because it would give to the user the means of sculpting by having the so helpful sense of space orientation...
