Polygroups
MagWeb:
Hi,
would it be possible to use SmoothBoundary to set a polygroup that could be selected with a single click using a SelectPolygroup? Also the sides of an extrusion/transformation would give nice edgeloops of polygroups as well as boolean results. Maybe its possible to simply add some random color information to such a group and the SelectPolygroup selects simply by searching for equal colors next to the click. If there would be a similarity treshold one could handle overlapping selections/groups as well if an intersecting 2nd selection would not replace the color of the 1st but would be added to it in the common area.
Maybe it could be a way to restrict Vol- and SurfaceBrushes to an area. I think of a RistrictToGroup option in the tool properties together with a HoldGroupBaundary option (similar to the one that SmoothBrush has with HoldBoundary). If RestrictToGroup is diasbled here and the brush affects other groups they should be joined
Just an idea that would make selection repeatable
RMS:
I see the appeal...it should be possible, at least to some degree. Haven't though it all the way through yet. For the selection-based operations it should be doable, the harder bit is for the brushing...ie how to preserve/change group membership during edge-flips operations.
MagWeb:
Know that this isn“t the most clever thing and not quite straight the MM way but maybe a first step for the Vol/SurfBrushes and groups:
What if you force to disable refinement for the Vol/Surfbrush when such a RestrictToGroup is enabled? So the group memberships should be kept. There are a lot of apps out there not able to do real time refinement.
If it works for the Select operations one could set the group to a sufficient subdivision there before or after brush actions.
RMS:
well, if I had the groups I could probably constrain the edge flips. It just might slow things down, but I guess that is a reasonable price to pay...

I have had the same idea.
I've been playing with Zbrush these last days trying to model hard surfaces, and I have seen PolyGroups combined with few special atributes for brushes are very powerfull.
I think would be nice to draw curves on surface and convert them to edge loops, or get them from selection borders. If these edge loops have a closed shape, then you get two Polygroup (inside/outside closed shape), if not, you get just an float edge loop.
These EdgeLoops sould be marked with a color and to have a soft shape.
It should be possible to draw more than one edge loop and to do boolean operations between them.
The brushes behavior should be different (if needed) close/far to the edge loops, and inside/outside a PolyGroup. If was posible to mask the brushes depending the side of the edge loop you are painting, would be fantastic.
PolyGroups would help you to hide or freeze certain areas, and EdgeLoops to crease/smooth borders.
Could be "full" option in the brush size to paint full object or just a PolyGroup part, for inflate or smooth certain areas.
Should be nice to have layers for poly groups. I mean, a way to store, change or restore edge loops when you needed. Of course, internally the mesh would be trestellated keeping in mind all layers alltime.
One more thing, when extrudes a face, for instance, sould be nice to automaticaly create PolyGroups for the border.
Notes: Z-Brushes like "Flatten, Planar, Polish, Trim, Slice" simplifies hard nodelling. Directional Power attribute for brushes (Exemple: smooth in the brush stroke direction or perpendicula) and Brush Depth for control the erosion degree are nice.
